Het Argentijnse ‘Refugiado’ (de vierde speelfilm van Diego Lerman) vertelt het verhaal van Laura en haar zoontje Matías, die op de vlucht slaan voor hun gewelddadige vriend en vader. Regisseur Diego Lerman had niet kunnen weten dat in juni van 2015 (toen zijn film al bijna een jaar uit was) duizenden Argentijnen de straat op gingen om te protesteren tegen geweld tegen vrouwen in het kader van de “Ni una menos”-campagne. Zelf zegt Lerman dat geweld diep geworteld zit in de Argentijnse maatschappij en in alle lagen van de bevolking voorkomt.
Ook dat blijkt uit ‘Refugiado’, waarin de jonge moeder Laura met haar zevenjarige zoontje Matías en een baby in de buik op de vlucht slaat nadat haar vriend Fabián haar (voor de zoveelste keer) in elkaar heeft geslagen. Zoon Matías vindt zijn moeder, nadat zij hem niet is komen ophalen van een feestje, op de vloer van de slaapkamer, een wrak vol blauwe plekken en bloed. De acteurs worden van heel dichtbij gefilmd in voornamelijk lange takes, de muziek speelt een belangrijke rol en het feit dat achtervolger Fabián geen enkele keer in beeld komt draagt bij aan de opbouwende spanning. Het minimale karakter van de plot wordt door al deze elementen aangevuld zodat de kijker de hele film op het puntje van zijn stoel zal zitten. Lerman laat Laura af en toe beslissingen nemen die je als kijker kunt betwijfelen maar anderzijds laat nadenken; wat zou ik in zo’n situatie doen? Een enkele keer wordt de boodschap wat erg expliciet verbeeld. Wanneer Matías (overigens ontroerend gespeeld door de jonge Sebastian Molinaro) in een onbewaakt ogenblik met een stok in zijn hand zijn frustratie uit, blijkt wel erg duidelijk dat geweld geweld uitlokt en dat een gewelddadige maatschappij haar kinderen opvoedt met agressie.
Maar ‘Refugiado’ schroomt niet om de waarheid te vertellen. Het open einde verraadt daarmee dat het gevaar helaas nog niet geweken is. Belangrijk lichtpunt is de warme opvang die moeder en zoon krijgen van vrijwel alle vrouwen in hun sociale netwerk. De mannen, zo is wel duidelijk, daar heb je niet veel aan, maar de vrouwen proberen het tij te keren. Scène 1: een rechercheur wordt ’s avonds aangesproken door een verwarde man die hem vraagt waarom hij zijn dossier niet heeft bekeken. Scène 2: die man is dood en zijn dossier blijkt te gaan om de dood van twee kinderen, 20 jaar eerder. Scène 3: de dader van die moorden heeft al bekend en zijn straf uitgezeten. Waarom bleef die man dan op een dader jagen?
Die paar scènes voldoen aan de eenvoudige, haast clichématige voorwaarden voor een detective, maar het is genoeg om ‘De fazantenmoordenaars’ met een heerlijke vaart te laten vertrekken. De nukkige rechercheur Carl Mørck duikt met zijn collega, goedzak Assad, toch in de zaak en stuit al snel op betrokkenheid van een oldboysnetwork van een elitekostschool. Met een simpele visuele ingreep – kleur, licht en zonnig ten opzichte van grauw, donker en bewolkt in de rest van de film – wordt vervolgens soepel teruggeblikt op die schooltijd. Dat stoort gek genoeg niet, al doet het afbreuk aan de intensiteit van de film. Zo is het jammer dat de twee rechercheurs geen fijn duo vormen. Hun houterige interactie voegt niks toe en voorkomt dat je met ze mee kunt leven.
In de tweede helft van de film blijkt bovendien dat de plot niet lekker in elkaar valt. De opbouwde spanning slibt langzaam weg en de flashbacks lijken soms een eigen leven te leiden. Ze komen op willekeurige momenten langs en sluiten vaak niet aan op de aanwijzingen die door de rechercheurs worden gevonden. Het is vooral te danken aan de nieuwsgierig makende eerste scènes dat ‘De fazantenmoordenaars’, ondanks zijn zwakke punten, toch een lekkerwegkijk filmervaring is.
